We are excited to announce the third VSPA lecture of this year: What is being a therapist really like?
Sanne Winchester, GZ-Psycholoog and soon to be Psychotherapist, author of the book “Ik mag niet bang zijn” is coming to speak about the pains and pleasures of being a psychologist. Or becoming one. For this lecture she will be your guide on ‘how to start as a psychologist’. Talking about the complex feelings and anxiety that comes with the job, the ‘imposter syndrome’ and topics such as empathy and sympathy. She will tell you why student psychologists might be as efficient (or even more!) in comparison with experienced therapists. She will tell you where, how and when to start with your work and what you can do (or shouldn’t do).

22/23 VSPA Truien!

You have been waiting for it! The 22/23 VSPA Sweater is here with a brand new design created for you by the Sweater Project! The patch on the front side of the sweater depicts the often forgotten mascot of the VSPA: the monkey Valentijn. As for the big print on the back: it represents all specializations in our faculty in front of the Greek letter Psy – which is both associated with psychology and the VSPA specifically. The style of the design stems from the1960’s psychedelics and the colours used incorporates the colour template of the VSPA. We hope you enjoy this product and we look forward to seeing it worn around!

Practical Information: This year, the sweaters were produced in collaboration with the company More Color, a local textile printing company based in Amsterdam. MoreColor was specifically chosen for their commitment to sustainability. Members of the sweater project even visited their showroom to see the quality of their products for themselves. The sweaters come in two styles, a classic hoodie with ‘kangaroo pockets’ and a quarter zip sweater! They are lined with fleece on the inside and are made of 85% organic cotton and 15% recycled polyester.

Lecture: Adjusting to the Unexpected

Tickets available at the bottom

We’re excited to announce the second VSPA lecture of 2023: Adjusting to the Unexpected – How Text Data Help Us Understand Human Behaviour.

Research on the psychological costs of the COVID-19 pandemic is becoming increasingly
important. While most studies use questionnaire methods to measure emotional adjustments and
other psychological variables, we approached the problem through the lens of text data. This talk
will discuss what we learned from a panel dataset consisting of survey responses and rich
textual data from participants tracked over three years. The first part will show how clustering
techniques reveal hidden distinct types of emotional adjustment obscured by traditional analyses.

The second part touches on natural language processing techniques to study text data. We will
discuss recent findings obtained from AI language models that ask entirely new questions about
human verbal behaviour. The talk closes with a bigger picture of text data, AI models and human
psychology.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, interest has only increased in the question of how we emotionally adjust to large, unexpected changes like it. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Bennett Kleinberg, who will give us insight into current research on this topic, as well as the methods used to gain these insights. We will learn how the analysis of text data recovers patterns that traditional analyses might have missed, and how AI models allow us to ask entirely new questions about human behaviour.

We are happy to welcome you to REC on the 16th of February, where Dr. Kleinberg will introduce us to the topic of text data and artificial intelligence in human psychology. With your ticket, you will get access to the lecture hall as well as snacks. You will also receive a colloquium point for your attendance.

We hope to see you there!
